Please read Sammy's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Sammy came into rescue when a change in his owners' circumstances meant he was being left home alone for long hours and not given the time and attention he needed.
Sammy is a 2 year old long-haired Jack Russell terrier, full of character, currently being fostered in Norwich, Norfolk alongside the family's two resident spaniels. He is more than happy sharing his space with them, delighting in plenty of rough-and-tumble play.
He is friendly to all dogs he meets when out, although his exuberance when greeting them can be a bit too full-on for some dogs. While this has improve during his short time in foster, some further training in how to say hello calmly would be beneficial.
Sammy is an active, intelligent little dog who loves and needs regular walks to prevent him becoming bored and restless. He is always the first to react to any signs that a walk is imminent and, at present, is getting two walks a day - a longer, 45 minute one in the morning and a shorter one later – although would happily go out for longer and more often should the opportunity arise!
On the lead his excitement leads to him pulling initially, but he quickly settles down and will even sit at kerbs when asked.
He has good recall around the home and garden, however requires some extra training before he can safely be allowed off-lead when out. This is due to his eagerness to rush up to greet/play with any and every dog he sees, at which times he becomes so focused on his goal that any commands are ignored. Sammy assumes all dogs wish to play so still needs his owners to keep him safe from any potentially less-friendly dogs and those being kept on-lead due to their own issues.
Sammy has not been tested around cats so it is not possible to say if he could live alongside one. He displayed a great deal of interest in the foster carer's guinea-pigs, trying to get through the wire mesh to them. Given his terrier-nature and instinct to chase he cannot be homed where there are small furries present.
Sammy loves people of all ages, becoming very excited when visitors arrive and jumping up to greet them. He finds it impossible to contain his enthusiasm and for 5-10 minutes will continue jumping all over them, giving lots of 'kisses' if possible, and displaying his special 'Sammy-smile' so they can admire his lovely teeth!
Whilst he adores children this very 'full-on' exuberance and occasional mouthing make it inadvisable to home him where any resident children are under the age of ten, easily knocked over or unable to understand that mouthing does not equate to biting.
Sammy's love of everything extends to his food, treats and toys. He is currently being fed on dry food twice a day which he will both "sit" and "wait" for. He is happy to have his bowl removed , displaying no possessiveness. He will not however give up his beloved ball quite so readily! Whenever treats are involved he becomes very focused, making him very trainable and a quick learner.
He travels well in the car, either in the boot or on the front seat, and is usually quiet, although does sometimes bark during the journey.
Sammy tends to sleep in the kitchen through the night and is settles happily both in his crate or his bed.
He needs daily brushing to prevent his hair becoming matted, especially around his beard, and is fine with this. His usual enthusiasm towards all life has to offer doesn't extend to being bathed, but he enjoys the towel-rub afterwards!
Sammy likes to be included in everything his humans are doing and does not like being prevented from following them as they leave the room, tending to pull at their sock, trousers, or even give an occasional nip to ensure he gets his own way. This is another area that his foster carer has been working on and will require further attention in his new home.
He can be left for up to three hours although not on a regular basis and, while he barks for a couple of minutes initially, he then settles down quietly in his crate, usually listening to the radio.
His fosterer has this to add:
“It is a pleasure to look after Sammy, he likes to be with you around the house and will get up and follow you wherever you go. In the evening he likes to sit next to you on the sofa and watch the TV.
He is a typical terrier in nature in that he does like a little bit of a bark now and again at noises such as helicopters going over the garden; he chases them away down the garden but he hasn't manged to catch one yet!
We have a nightly funny 5 minutes when the heating fires up.. he runs at the fireplace gruffing and then will sit and watch it - I think he thinks theres someone in there! He has me in fits on a daily basis with his dog grin when I come home.
The only thing that I've found that Sammy doesn't like is being held by his collar or stopped from going through doorways indoors, he will try to give your fingers a nibble but not really aggressively more that he is determined to get his own way. This is an area I am been working on and so far he has been quick to learn and I think he will get the hang of these new rules fairly quickly.
He really is a little character packed full of charm.”
Sammy is neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, flea and worm treated.
