Please read Rug's details carefully before submitting an application form. Any applications which do not meet the criteria will not be contacted.
Rug came into rescue through no fault of his own following a sudden change in his owner's circumstances which led to the difficult decision to re-home him.
Rug is a 2 year old short-coated chihuahua currently being fostered in Norfolk alongside 4 other small dogs, all female, and two cats. While settling in to his new surroundings, he took a week or so to come out of his shell so was a little nervous around them, but by the end of the week he was completely comfortable around the others.
He is quite wary of (but not aggressive towards) other dogs met while out on walks, tending become quite vocal. He will stop barking when told however. Once he is familiar with another dog he is fine.
He is usually walked twice a day, becoming excited when he sees his lead coming out. There is no set routine at present – Rug will happily walk for miles or be okay with shorter walks. He does not become agitated if a walk is occasionally missed as he expends so much energy racing round the garden with the other dogs at home during the day!
He walks nicely on the lead. Off-lead Rug rarely ventures far from his owner and has fantastic recall, returning as soon as he is called.
Rug is a little nervous when meeting new people both out walking and in the home. He quickly settles down and within minutes will ensconce himself on the visitor's lap if permitted.
He has never lived with children under the age of 17, and due to this as well as his habit of eating anything he can find laying about on the floor, especially tissues and paper, he would be best suited to a home in which any resident children are over the age of 10.
Rug is being fed raw tripe once a day, usually in his crate to ensure the other dogs don't steal it from him! He is more than happy to share a bowl with other dogs and is also fine with his bowl being picked up before he has finished eating.
He does not like being left alone in the house as he has always lived in a multi-dog household so is accustomed to having company. In this situation he can be left for up to four hours uncrated without issue.
Again, with sleeping, Rug needs another dog to curl up with. He takes himself off to his crate at bed-time but will only settle through the night if he has at least one other dog for company. For this reason Rug can not be re-homed as an only dog.
He is fine with car travel, preferring to sit on the lap of whoever is in the passenger seat. If this is not possible Rug will need to be crated as he will keep trying to get into the front of the car if not.
He has no problems with being bathed, towel-dried and brushed.
His fosterer has this to add:
“ I had a friend come round with her 2 tiny dogs & he kept growling at them & then running back to me...big dogs he does get nervous, but he is a nervy little dog. He sometimes barks at the other dog or he will just come back & ask to be picked up. My friends dogs were male, so not sure if he was unsure because they were a dog he'd not met before or because they were male
he enjoys his food, & treats, he actually gets through them pretty quick compared to others, not sure if he has strong teeth or just swallows them
he does want to get on your lap all the time especially when he first came in, now he still likes to but will lay else where aswell
he always seems happy, his tongue hangs out due to a maleformed bottom jaw, this can cause him to lick a lot, he'll also licks you or any thing else
Have to watch what ever is on the floor as he will try & eat it, especially paper or tissues. “
Rug is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
