Archie found himself in rescue after being abandoned by his owner at a local car boot sale. An elderly lady who was walking her own dog, was asked to walk Archie by the owner, who then vanished leaving him in her care. She contacted the rescue to seek help in finding Archie a new home.
Archie is around 7 months old and is a Jack Russell Terrier cross. He is currently being fostered in Solihull, West Midlands alongside two older female dogs who find his puppy exuberance a little unsettling. He quickly picked up on this and is quite gentle with them, but he would definitely benefit from having a young, energetic doggy companion who could keep up with him and engage in the boisterous play that puppies love.
All dogs Archie meets while out are greeted nicely, both on and off the lead. He does sometimes bark if he sees another dog when on-lead, but only due to excitement and wanting to play with every dog he sees.
He is walked 2-3 times a day at present, usually for 20 minutes at a time. He will, however, walk for miles given the opportunity, very much enjoying off-lead time when he can really race around and release any pent up energy.
His recall is fantastic, even when there are distractions, and he will return immediately he is called.
He tends to pull on his lead initially in his eagerness, but settles quickly when reminded to “heel”.
The only time Archie has been around cats is while out on walks. He seems interested in them although has shown no inclination to chase them. He could possibly be homed alongside dog-savvy cats. He has yet to encounter small furries or birds up close.
Archie loves everyone he meets. His inability to contain his enthusiasm leads to him jumping up to say hello, and doing a little dance on his back legs. He has a tendency to lick a lot too, especially people's ears. In the home he will bark to alert his owner to someone at the door, but stops as soon as it is opened.
He is good around children, however, due to him quickly becoming over-excited, jumping up for toys and occasionally 'mouthing' (as puppies do!), we are looking to home Archie where any resident children are over the age of 10 and able to handle quite boisterous play.
Archie has recently started attending puppy classes and would benefit from these being continued in his new home.
He enjoys his food and is usually fed alone at present to give the fosterer's elderly dogs a chance to eat without him attempting to take their food too! He does growl if another dog approaches him during meals, however is fine with humans removing his bowl.
His favourite game is 'tug' which he will play with both humans and other dogs, and he loves any toys that he can have a good old chew on.
Archie travels well in the car wearing a car harness, usually falling asleep quickly once the journey is underway.
He copes relatively well with being left at home, providing he has a doggy companion. He knows the routine when his fosterer is preparing to leave and will run to his crate in anticipation of the treats and toys she gives him just prior to leaving. Following the routine, Archie can now be left for up to three hours without issue.
He sleeps straight through the night in a crate in the bedroom, but would very likely settle anywhere as long as he had company, and will give a little whine to let his owner know when he wakes up in the morning and needs to toilet. Archie still has a very occasional accident but is 98% house-trained.
Archie is not keen on being bathed. He does, however, love the cuddles and towel rub afterwards, and he enjoys being brushed.
His fosterer has this to add:
“Archie has been an absolute joy to foster and is such a good boy. Archie would suit an active person who will need to keep his brain active. Being such a bright boy he picks things up straight away and would excel at something like obedience or agility. He is a playful youngster that would benefit from another playful dog in the home. Archie is a complete cuddle monster and is happiest lying on your lap getting lots of love. He is going to turn out to be such an amazing dog and for my first foster I couldn’t have asked for a better dog. It will be so hard to see him go as he has fitted in so well and we love him to bits.”
Archie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
