Please read Toffee's details carefully before deciding to submit an application form. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be contacted.
Toffee came to rescue due to being handed in at a boarding kennels following his owners being no longer able to afford him.
Toffee is two years old and is a relatively large Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, currently being fostered in Norwich alongside other dogs. He is very easy-going and more than happy sharing his space with them.
He is being given just one 30-45 minute walk a day at present but would happily go more often if this is offered. He greets all dogs met while out in a friendly manner, rushing over to say hello if off-lead. Unfortunately his recall is very poor as he is a little hard of hearing, and for this reason he is rarely allowed off-lead unless in an enclosed area or with dogs he knows. Toffee does respond to hand signals, but obviously this is not much use if he is facing in the opposite direction! He is fine being lead-walked and his relatively low energy levels mean he gets sufficient exercise this way.
He will pull if on a normal lead and collar and is quite strong. The foster carer has recently found that using a halti collar prevents this, allowing Toffee to walk nicely on the lead, however he would benefit from further training.
He has not been tested around cats, other small furries or birds so we are unable to say how he will react to these.
Toffee loves people of all ages, happily accepting fuss from strangers while out. He greets everyone with a wagging tail without jumping up or becoming too 'bouncy'. He was a little head-shy, ducking down if someone went to pat him on the head, but this has improved dramatically in the past few weeks. He loves to be tickled under his chin and stroked on his back.
He has lived with children from the age of 5 upwards. Whilst he loves being around them, care needs to be taken around food. He is not the least bit aggressive but can be very persistent in trying to take the food, following the person around and jumping up to reach the food if possible. For this reason alone, we are looking to home Toffee where any resident children are over the age of 7.
Toffee is fed twice daily on dry food, which he is now happy with. He gets fed in a crate due to him tending to growl if other dogs in the house approach him while eating. He allows humans to remove his bowl without issue, however. Similarly with bones – he will guard them from the other dogs rather than surrender them easily. He loves treats of any kind and, if asked, will respond to the “sit”, “paw” and “down” commands in order to get one.
Toffee's passion in life is tuggy rope toys – he will play with these for hours with anyone willing, be that dog or human. He becomes very excited while playing, making little growly sounds and encouraging his playmate to keep the game going as long as possible. He will drop toys on command.
Toffee has been examined by vets due to appearing to be slightly lame in his right hind leg, and has had radiographs taken under general anaesthetic to investigate this.
He has a grade IV patella luxation, confirmed by a second opinion. The lameness is entirely mechanical, causing him no pain at all, nor hindering his movements, therefore negating the need for complicated surgery and the subsequent lengthy rehabilitation. The vet stated: “Toffee should be able to live a full and active life without further intervention. However there may be a chance if him developing arthritic changes in his stifle joint as he gets older”. Toffee also has a slight sub-luxation of his hip joints, but this does not affect him in any way.
Toffee is quite vocal when in the car, usually travelling the boot which he has no problem jumping in and out of. He becomes excited, especially if the other dogs are in there with him, as this implies a walk! He is a little quieter if he is the only dog on the car and he is allowed to sit in the front passenger seat. He does not suffer from car sickness and copes well on longer journeys.
He is fine being left for up to 3 hours with another dog for company, and has occasionally been left completely alone in the house for an hour with no issues. Providing he has an owner who is willing and able to spend a lot of time playing or interacting with him, Toffee could potentially be homed as an only dog.
He is used to sleeping in a crate in the kitchen and is 100% house-trained.
He is also okay being bathed, and enjoys being towel-dried and brushed.
His fosterer has this to add:
“Toffee is so loveable, he has such an easy going nature and would make a great companion and would fit most households. His leg causes him no problems and he's always the first to want to get out of the door for his walk. He really has got everything going for him and it would be hard to find such an easy going dog.
He really comes alive when he plays tuggy and you certainly can hear that he enjoys it too which is lovely.”
Toffee is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
