Please read Benji's details carefully before deciding whether to submit an application form. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be contacted.
Benji came to the rescue following being sold by the breeder to an elderly couple who then found themselves unable to manage a needy, active puppy, and subsequently crated him for most of the day. They were led to believe he was 8 weeks old when they bought him, however, given the behaviours he displayed, it is considered far more likely he was just 5 weeks old when sold. This early removal from him Mum and subsequent isolation meant he arrived at the rescue a very clingy, anxious little puppy, petrified of other dogs.
Benji is now 18 weeks old and is a Maltese x Jack Russell Terrier, currently being fostered in Hingham, Norfolk, alongside several other small dogs. He quickly adapted to this and began gaining confidence, showing him to be highly intelligent and quick to follow their lead around the home. Careful introductions are still needed when a new dog is introduced as Benji will growl and try to dominate him/her.
Similarly on walks, Benji is anxious and lacking in confidence when faced with new situations, including meeting other dogs. His fear makes him initially growl but if he is permitted to slowly approach the dog to have a sniff he will then wag his tail, providing it remains calm. He is still unable to cope with 'bouncy' dogs, becoming fearful and distressed. This is purely down to him missing out on that crucial early socialisation, and can be overcome with confident and experienced handling. Benji has been attending puppy classes to help him learn how to socialise with other dogs and it is absolutely vital that his new owners can commit to continuing with the classes.
He is currently being walked twice a day, often in fields but also in busier areas where there is traffic and a lot of activity in order to build his confidence around the everyday sights, smells and sounds of the world around him.
He walks nicely on the lead without pulling and his recall when off-lead is brilliant. In his puppy classes he has mastered the basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay' and is now learning to 'heel', making excellent progress.
Benji loves people of all ages and can be very 'licky' if allowed. He is used to being around teenagers but has no experience of living with very young children. Because of this we are looking for a home where any children are aged 8+.
He is fine around cats, small furries and chickens, able to mix with then without issue.
Benji was initially a very picky eater but now thoroughly enjoys his food. He is being fed a raw food diet in the foster home, happy to share with the other dogs and also fine with having food removed. He loves treats, making these perfect as rewards during training.
He adores his toys, especially his beloved ball which he loves to play 'fetch' with, and is happy to share.
Car travel is not something Benji enjoys at present. He cries and, still being very young, he does get car sick occasionally. Being crated during journeys helps him settle.
Despite him arriving with severe separation anxiety, his fosterer has successfully worked on this and is now able to leave him for up to three hours, uncrated, in the home with one or two other dogs for company. He is left with a treat and seems to cope well. We will be looking to home Benji where there is at least one resident dog whom he can both gain confidence and learn from.
Benji does not settle down to sleep if shut away from his humans, and has grown accustomed to sleeping upstairs with them, often on the bed. Ideally we would like a home where this will be permitted.
He is fine being bathed, dried and brushed.
With being just 2-3 months old when coming into rescue, Benji was not house-trained. He has quickly learned from the other dogs and is now 90% clean. He still has the occasional accident so this is another area that will require ongoing training.
Benji's fosterer has this to add:
"Benji is a joy to have but he has been and is hard work, he came in with terrible separation anxiety, no toilet training he was scared of cars, wouldnt walk on the lead and scared of dogs, he is getting better with training and this must be kept up so one of the criteria is that we will check on the training class that has been booked and follow the course by phoning the tutor. The socialising with other dogs is vital and he must be rehomed with another playful youngish dog. His learning and intelligence is brilliant and he will take on board anything you throw at him. He is very domineering and on going training is needed to keep him in check, if spoilt he will turn into a unsociable dog!!
He has been a absolute joy to have and we will find it hard to let him go, he is a big part of the family, a small dog with a very big attitude! We Loves him to bits."
Benji is vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated, but is not yet neutered, due to his age.
He will leave with a neutering contract requiring proof that this has been done by the time he is 6 months old.
