Please read Jimmy's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Jimmy came to rescue after being advertised 'free to good home'. Fortunately a rescue supporter made contact and advised the owner on the risks of such an advertisement and asked if she would be willing to consider rescue, and when she agreed we were contacted and asked for help. This delightful young chap came to us just before Christmas and has made such sterling progress recently we felt an updated homing thread was in order.
Jimmy is a gorgeous 10 month old JRT currently in a foster home in Norwich which he is sharing with two young female Springer Spaniels and 3 young children.
Jimmy loves the company of other dogs and is very playful with them. He chooses to cuddle up and sleep with one of the other dogs and will share his space with them and is happy for them to choose his bed to sleep in.
But he has also shown recently that he is not totally reliant on having another dog around for company and can now be left at home alone for occasional trips out. Whilst this has only been for an hour so far, we feel that he does have the potential to be homed both as a solo dog, or with another friendly companion, so long as if he were homed alone his opportunities for meeting other dogs out and about were maintained through social walks, training clubs and other dog related ventures.
Outside of the home Jimmy loves to meet other dogs, greeting them in a friendly manner. He will only bark at them if they bark at him first. He loves to run alongside another dog if off lead, and loves to be chased/play chase.
Jimmy is happy with one walk a day, usually 45 mins but would easily do more. His foster Mum mixes lead walking with off lead running. If a walk has ever been missed due to family commitments, Jimmy has never been destructive or shown high anxiety levels, he will just want to play more with the dogs in the home. He will walk in the rain although doesn't enjoy the rain and has to be actively encouraged to go in the garden to perform his business in bad weather. He happily wears a coat in the winter to keep him warm.
There has been some progress with Jimmy's lead walking, and although still a little pully at first, he does settle down. He is also learning to focus a little more on maintaining a constant position rather than his previous meandering and zig-zagging. This will need some continued work, but he is already getting the idea.
When off lead Jimmy's recall is good, especially with the aid of treats, even with the distraction of new dogs to go and meet.
Jimmy could live with cats under careful introduction where those cats were already dog savvy and an owner had previous experience of such introductions.
This affable young chap loves to greet new people. Outside on walks Jimmy will meet people with interest; at home he may occasionally bark at new people but once he has sniffed a hand he will stop and want to investigate and get to know you. Jimmy will only jump up if he has done what is asked of him and the treat isnt given as promised, he then can jump a little to find where you are hiding it! Jimmy has met children from the age of 4 upwards, and has shown no issues. He does not choose to interact however, preferring not to play with, or be played with by them. He will accept a little fuss, but if it becomes overly fussy or rough he will take himself from the situation. We feel for his comfort it would be best to home him where children are 8 years and over and aware of the need for a dog to have its own space at times and not be harassed.
Jimmy loves his food and is always the first to finish but does not approach the other dogs bowls. He is very food focused however, and can be an opportunist, so has the potential to take food from worktops or table edges if he can reach them. This will need training and careful supervision while he learns the rules. However, this interest in food makes for a handy tool for training, and we would like to see a new home commit to training classes to progress the basic training already started with Jimmy.
Another positive is that Jimmy travels well in the car. He jumps in and out of the boot happily. If told to wait he will stay in the boot until told to jump out. He travels quietly, and has been in the car for around an hour's drive. He is also happy to be bathed and groomed.
Jimmy would be suited to a home where someone is around most of the time, but he can be left for up to 2 hours on a regular basis if with another dog, 4 hours occasionally. He is learning to accept being left completely on his own, and is able to do so for an hour without issue. He is clean and dry on these occasions. His foster Mum sometimes leaves the radio on. He is non destructive, although has on occasion picked up one of the childrens' toys as a comfort chew, but will willingly give it up when asked. At night Jimmy sleeps in a crate in the kitchen.
Jimmy's foster Mum has this to add:
"Jimmy just wants to be everyones friend! He has such a lovely sweet nature and is always happy. I could ramble on about the loveliness of Jimmy all day to anyone who will listen (and quite often do)! He is happy to sleep downstairs but after his neuter op he slept on our bed and he loves to curl up with his head under your chin! He still has very occasional toilet accidents, but these are improving. We will miss him so much when he moves on but he so deserves a forever home."
Jimmy is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
