Please read all Toby's details carefully before submitting an application.
Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be contacted.
Toby came into the rescue following an urgent plea for help by his lady owner. She had married into a farming family where Toby had escaped from the house and been found worrying the livestock, indicating that he was not safe to be in that kind of environment. The decision was made to rehome Toby rather than risk a reoccurrence.
Toby is a 4 year old Westie x JRT and is currently being fostered in Norfolk alongside several other dogs. Careful introductions were needed when he first arrived as he did not bond immediately with the other dogs, being quite wary and very quick to fly at them when feeling threatened. As Toby accepted the others and found his place in the pack, the spats very quickly reduced and he will now happily play with them for hours. However, he can be dominant at times and, when challenged, does not like to back down. For this reason he would be best homed with a less dominant dog or as an only dog.
He is fine when meeting other dogs out on walks.
Toby is usually walked twice a day, morning and afternoon. His excitement at going out for walks does tend to make him pull on the lead and he needs telling to heel – this will require further training in his new home. He has excellent recall in the house and garden but due to his terrier nature and high prey drive he has not been allowed off-lead while in foster so this has not been tested outside. Toby has shown he cannot be trusted around livestock and this is likely to be the same with other small furries. He is, however, fine with cats.
While Toby does love all people, careful introductions are needed when adult visitors first come into the home. He will bark and needs to be given space to approach them when he feels safe. Once he is familiar with people he is very loving and enjoys cuddling up to anyone in the family.
Toby loves all children and has regularly been around those aged 4+ . Due to his slight wariness of visitors we will only home where the children age over the age of 8 and able to understand that Toby may need space at times.
Toby is currently being fed a raw diet and has a very good appetite. His foster Mum has been feeding him separately but there have been no issues if the other dogs have approached while he is eating.
He loves his toys, happy to play alone throwing his ball around the garden, and just as happy playing with the other dogs. He has no trouble sharing his beloved toys or having them taken from him.
Toby is fully house trained. He is also crate trained and quite happy to go in there to rest as well as throughout the night.
When left at home he does cry initially but quickly settles down to sleep in his crate where he can be left for up to 4 hours.
Toby travels well, again in his crate, and thoroughly enjoys car journeys, He is also happy to be groomed.
Toby's foster Mum has this to add:
“Toby is a very playful dog that once bonded with another dog will play for hours, plays constantly with the pup we have and is very gentle with him although pinches his toys from him, he is like a 4 year old going on 12 weeks. He loves a ball, soft toys and ropes. He is very obedient and very loyal, loves to cuddle up with you or anyone in the family. He is very prey driven and is kept away from my chickens and small furries. He has been a absolute pleasure the time he has spent with us and fitted in so well with the other 4 dogs. He is going to be sorely missed.”
Toby is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
