Please read Fortran's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Fortran is a handsome crossbreed of unknown parentage, although we wonder if he has a whippety background, or possibly even Ratonero Bodeguero with his Spanish origins; but whatever his breed mix, he is truly unique and an absolute delight!
Fortran came to TLDR when his British owner suffered the loss of his wife, and having lived in Spain for the duration of their marriage needed to return to the UK to the support of family and friends to rebuild his life. The couple owned 12 dogs however, and he knew that in order to find a home and work he would need to find good homes for some of his pack. Having contacted all of the major, large rescues without luck he found us and we agreed to help.
Fortran is 7 years of age, and has been sharing a foster home with 3 other dogs, one of them our very own Lily (aka Skinner) a Special Care dog recently adopted by her foster family. Having lived in a multi-dog pack Fortran is obviously comfortable to be around other dogs, but does like his space and will give a little warning growl if they are too boisterous or up close and personal. He's a chilled lad, and likes to do things at his own pace when he's good and ready, so a home with young pups or lively playful dogs would not be ideal. But an equally relaxed companion who likes the easy life, and knows polite manners and allows equal space would be welcome.
With dogs outside the home Fortran is equally reserved. Whilst he will happily run and play, it's not in a full on interactive manner, he always keeps that little distance, and will give them a warning if they become too pushy. He doesn't like 'full contact' play, but will run alongside them and is a joy to watch in full flow as he has the grace and elegance of a racing type breed, but in a gentle easy mode.
Fortran has previously lived with 6 cats, and whilst he was a little startled at the cats in the foster home as they were unknown to him, he quickly realised they were after all just cats, and braved himself towards them. He now ignores them and will walk past them in order to get to the water dish or food. He may take a little time to adjust to cats in a new home, but as long as the cats are used to dogs and non reactive he will accept them. He also ignores the family's ponies, so may be suited to a home with stables. He has not been tested with small furries.
Whilst Fortran has met and greeted children aged 9 and 6 calmly and gently, we feel he would not tolerate being bounced on or constantly harassed as he is a gentle soul, and for this reason would prefer to home where children are aged 8+ and dog sensible, able to enjoy the pleasure a dog brings to a home, to play fetch and give cuddles, but also respect his need for space and rest when he chooses.
Fortran really likes people and greets in a calm and friendly manner. If you are lucky you get the Fortran toothy grin, this may be unnerving to somebody not used to a dog 'smiling' at them, but yes, he really does smile!
This wonderful lad does not appear to be possessive of toys, and will happily play with a tennis ball when thrown. He appears to have no possessive traits around food towards humans. He is currently fed separately to the other dogs however, so we are not sure how he might be if fed around other dogs, but as he was previously living in a pack situation, it is most likely that as long as the other dogs were not invasive he would be fine. He has a good appetite and has adjusted well to a new diet (the food he was used to in Spain is not available in the UK).
Fortran travels beautifully in the car, settling quickly and easily in a crate. He walks well on lead, needing only minimal initial correction not to pull, then readily settling into a steady walk. He also loves being groomed because it's all additional fuss and attention. And whilst he hasn't been let off lead on open fields, his recall in the house, large garden and fosterer's secure field has been spot on. He can be spooked by noises he is not used to however, and we feel would not be entirely comfortable in a busy town setting with a lot of traffic or high noise levels.
Whilst he has many many positives, this sensitive fellow does suffer from some separation anxiety and will need a home where someone is at home most of the time who is able to reassure him and work on building up the time he is left in a steady and gentle manner. As he has come from a home where he has been part of a large pack of dogs for company, and a family at home for him much of the time, we will only consider non working homes, and those with an existing calm, steady dog (ideally female) for company. We would also prefer a home where he will be permitted to sleep in your bedroom, and not isolated from his people at night.
Fortran really is a wonderful boy, intuitive and sensitive to your moods, he bonds readily and is immensely loyal. He would make a fantastic companion and has a delightful comic personality when he comes out of his shell.
His fosterer has this to add:
"Fortran is a very calm and gentle natured dog and wants to please all the time. He can be a bit licky and needs to be reminded that we don't want him in our face all the time. He is fully house trained and will ask to go out. At night he sleeps in our bedroom in his own bed very contently. He will need somebody around most of the time until he feels less anxious when left."
Fortran is neutered, vaccinated (including rabies), microchipped, flea and worm treated. He is 17 inches to the shoulder & weighs 14.5kgs.
Summary
A home with someone around most of the day and able to work on separation issues
A home with another placid, easy going, non intrusive dog (ideally female)
Dog friendly cats are welcome
Ponies/horses are welcome
Resident or visiting children aged 8+
An active home with a love of walks and outdoor activities
A rural / semi rural setting ideally
