Please read Willow's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Willow is one of 3 Chihuahuas who came to The Little Dog Rescue after being dumped before Christmas. Willow was clearly only a young girl who had already had a litter and was in season again. Although a very affectionate girl she does not appear to have much experience of the outside world, and we are seeking a knowledgeable experienced home to continue her confidence building.
Willow has been sharing the foster home with multiple dogs without issue. She can be quite wary at first and may growl but it is only nervousness. Once she has been properly introduced and is comfortable with them she is happy to mingle. As she is not fully vaccinated yet she has not been walked so has not met dogs out and about, however from observing her natural caution with all things new and her tendency to initially bark defensively and back away it is likely that she will need work on socialising in a positive manner to overcome her wariness in all new situations.
She could share a home with other friendly and well mannered dogs, ideally of a similar size and who are confident and comfortable with life and would help Willow learn to be equally easy going. She could also live with dog friendly cats, although will chase them if the other dogs do, so a home where these already live in harmony is essential.
Her foster Mum is working on lead walking. She is a little unsure of the harness (as she was about wearing a collar at first) but is tolerating this much more easily now and beginning to show more interest in exploring.
Willow has not had contact with any young children whilst in foster but has met several teenagers with ease. She does like people, and enjoys the fuss this brings, even if initially she will dart in for a fuss, then run off, to and fro with excitement, or immediately roll on her back in a submissive manner. She loves visitors and if they sit down will be on their lap in a shot. She does not really settle for a cuddle though, tending to be excitable and bouncy, wanting to lick and kiss. This may settle in time once she has an opportunity to truly bond with someone special. She certainly wants very much to love and be loved. With a limited knowledge of her interaction with young children, and her timid nature we will only home where children are aged 15+, and are mature enough to respect her need for calm and sensible handling.
If being left at home for periods Willow really does not like being crated, and will cry. If left uncrated with the other dogs for company, she will cry briefly, but does settle and is very pleased to see you when you return.
She travels quite well in the car, only barking or whining a little when setting off, or if the momentum of the car changes, but had quite a long journey to get to her foster home without any problems.
Her recall is quite good as she learns her name, although she does have a fear of doorways, and doors opening and closing, so is sometimes reluctant to go through these, although this is improving.
Willow is nervous in the bath, but will stand nicely and let you get on with it, and enjoys the towel dry and attention afterwards. She will also allow you to gently brush her.
She shows no aggression or possessiveness of toys, food or treats around humans, although will growl at other dogs if they go near her whilst eating.
Willow's foster Mum has this to add:
She is quite a needy dog and if you have a dog on your lap she will push herself on, which I don't mind but then she is continually trying to get to your face to lick you, if very stern with her she will sometimes settle beside you. When sleeping she likes to be under a blanket. If you call one of the other dogs she is straight there, when I move she has to follow me. She is quite happy to cuddle up with any of the other dogs.
Willow is microchipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated.
She is NOT spayed as she was in season when she arrived with the rescue. She is being homed under a Spay Agreement, which must be adhered to and will be followed up on. She will be able to be spayed in mid March and a new owner will need to provide veterinary evidence of this. ** Willow is now in the ideal timing for spaying and this is being arranged **
She has a small umbilical hernia which causes her no problems and has been checked by the vet. It may be possible to correct this when she is spayed, although is not essential surgery.
