Please read Macey's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
This beautiful girl came to us having been left tied to a gatepost when her owners moved house. A neighbour took her in, but was unable to keep her due to her nervousness of situations and Macey found herself in rescue just days after being kicked out of her home. We subsequently learned that poor Macey had been in at least 2 other homes previously. It is really no wonder that she has her fears and insecurities, and an understanding, gentle home is needed.
Macey is a Patterdale X believed to be around 4 years of age. She is currently in a foster home in Norfolk with several other dogs, but it has taken her time to accept them and mix easily with them. She is very cautious of initial meetings, and can be too intrusive and full on with other dogs, facing up to them, nudging, sniffing, with poor understanding of polite doggy manners. It seems she may not have been well socialised previously, and that this is still a learning experience for her; she is less comfortable in a multi-pack situation. However she does eventually settle with dogs she is living with and becomes familiar with, and we would consider homing her with a placid, non reactive male, ideally larger than her if the situation was the right one for her.
On walks though Macey meets and greets other dogs with a waggy tail and is less stressed about this.
Macey cannot be homed with cats or small furries.
Whilst Macey does enjoy the company of children, and has shown excellent behaviour in the foster home around them, she can be grumbly in some circumstances. Whilst this has not led to any teeth showing or snapping, we would prefer to home where children are at least 12 years old and dog sensible, and will observe rules about personal space.
Macey does not really play with toys as such, although on a temporary stopover on route to her foster home she did become fascinated with a sturdy rubber ball with a bell in it, and would play fetch with a human. She also learned how to drop the ball from the top of the stairs to create her own game of chase!
It is possible Macey has been subject to poor feeding routines in the past as she wolfs her food down quickly as if fearful it will be removed or eaten, and she will growl if you go near her food. This can be worked on over time, with patience and as she understands the food is all hers and she will always be fed. She will sit and beg for treats, and does this beautifully.
Macey is happy to settle at home when left for 3-4 hours. However if you are elsewhere in the house, and access to you is prevented by a closed door she will bark and whine. She currently sleeps on the landing and settles best here. If left downstairs at night she becomes very distressed.
Car travel is not Macey's favourite thing, and she is best crated for journeys for her safety as she becomes very nervous. She also does not like being groomed and will growl.
Macey has some wonderful positives. She is excellent on lead and walks very well. She adores people and greets new faces willingly and with confidence. She adores cuddles on her terms, and will actively seek you out for prolonged belly rubbing sessions!
Her recall is very good and she knows a number of commands already, including sit, stay, bed, come away, off/down, in, upstairs, downstairs etc. She is very intelligent and loves people and food so much that training would be a useful bonding tool.
This beautiful girl has touched many of our hearts, her sad story, her unfailing love for humans, her fear of doing wrong...she really is a sweetheart who deserves the perfect home able to allow her time to settle, gain confidence and trust, and to know that she will never again be unwanted.
Macey's foster Mum had this to add:
"Macey is a very nervous dog who I feel has had very bad treatment in the past, if a broom or mop comes out she will run and hide shaking. Often if you approach her she cowers and growls at you. She does not like handling and will come to you on her terms and is very affectionate. She loves to sit on your lap and would do all day. Her perfect home would be with no dogs and to have total one to one with someone. She is brilliant with commands and no handling needs to take place. She has growled at me but never snapped or shown her teeth. She does not like to sleep downstairs and will cry so she sleeps upstairs on the landing. She is such a little diamond who deserves such a loving home for the rest of her life.
Macey is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
