Please read Pepper's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Pepper is a very special little girl who touched people's hearts after breaking her leg and needing many weeks of care and rehabilitation before reaching this happy point...being ready for a forever home!
Pepper is a delightful and very beautiful 6 month old Whippet. Despite her recent accident, she has no ongoing medical needs and is a typical lively bouncy puppy girl, enjoying life to the max. She adores the company of other dogs, but like most puppies is full on, nipping and bouncing for their attention, and being a 'puppy nuisance', so a home with a tolerant, steady and confident dog would be sensible, one who can show her the ropes and whose good manners would help her grow up to be a well adjusted young lady, but who still has a playful edge and can help her burn off that energy.
When meeting other dogs on walks Pepper can sometimes bark, is occasionally a little boisterous, but is always happy and excited about these new experiences. At times she is told off by the other dogs, and is always a little surprised by this, unsure what she did wrong, but takes it with good grace.
Pepper has met rabbits in pens in the garden and been ok with these. She has met a cat and just watched it until it ran off at which point she would have chased but listened when reprimanded. Dog savvy cats may be ok with sensible introductions but she would probably chase runners. Chickens and birds are a definite no unless very securely fenced.
She has been living with a teenager and has visited young children from 2 years of age. She has met lots of children when out and about and isn't too boisterous with them. We would consider homing with children aged 5 yrs and over, and will consider a little leeway with this if sound evidence can be shown that resident children are very dog aware and can display the appropriate behaviour needed around a young puppy.
Pepper loves her food and is highly trainable with treat motivation. She also loves her toys and plays with soft toys, raggers, antlers and balls. She loves her soft toys best, and shows no guarding or possessive tendencies with these. She is happy to play tug with the other dogs.
She is fed separately from the other dogs in the foster home as she is on different food and due to her high energy levels and metabolism is fed more often. It is likely she would try to finish other dogs' food for them if given an opportunity.
Having needed constant supervision and care for some weeks now, Pepper does not like to be left at all, so a new owner will need to work slowly and consistently with separation, building up periods of leaving her gradually. This means that we are looking for a home where someone is at home most of the time and able to work on this process.
Pepper walks very well on the lead, and although she needs a little more heelwork, she is getting the hang of this well now that walks are a regular event. She also travels well in a car either crated, or on a harness.
This little girl is always friendly, but how much interest she shows in new faces depends on other distractions. If she is busy sniffing and exploring, she may not give more than a cursory glance. If she's got time to spare however, she'll greet you as long lost family!
Peppers recall is good but not perfect yet. It has been tested on a very long lead and also off lead in a secure area. With her love for treats she will generally do anything for them.
Although not a big fan of baths or showers, she is beginning to get used to them. However, with her short coat she doesn't need much in the way of regular grooming.
Pepper's foster Mum has this to add:
"Pepper is a typical Whippet. She sleeps for a lot of the day and likes to be covered in blankets. She would prefer to be on your bed.. actually she would prefer to be IN your bed and won't get up until she absolutely has to.
She weighs about 8kgs (currently) and has such long legs that she never quite knows where they are. Pepper is a very capable jumper and can easily jump over normal stair gates. She jumped straight onto the kitchen surface from a standing start so no low fences.
I feel that, she would prefer to have another playful dog in the home as she has always had other dogs and does choose to cuddle up with them. I would suggest a dog(s) of a similar size to herself as she can be a little overpowering for small dogs and she likes to rough play so a dog too large may damage her unintentionally.
She is not a nervous dog and has shown no fear of anything in particular. There is no way you are going to keep her off the furniture. She has proved that she is not destructive but does have a liking for fluffy wool and slippers. She feels the cold badly and dislikes having to go out walking if it's chilly unless she has plenty of jumpers and coats on!"
Pepper is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
Following her last vet check she has been given the all clear and is not expected to have any ongoing medical needs or problems resulting from her break, although may suffer some arthritis in later life. A healthy diet and exercise regime, and supplements for healthy joints would be a sensible precaution.
Summary
A home where some is at home most of the time in order to work on Pepper's separation worries
A commitment to the usual puppy training and socialisation needs
At least one other resident dog, ideally a tolerant, steady, confident leader to guide Pepper as she develops into maturity
Children aged 5 + and/or with proven dog sensible behaviour
Dog savvy cats only and previous experience of careful introductions
