Please read Basil's details carefully before submitting an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Basil is a delightful Parson JRT of around 2-3 years of age. He came to us from a private home narrowly avoiding being put to sleep being wrongly labelled as aggressive for giving warning growls. However he was being relentlessly teased and tormented by children, to the extent that he would hide behind furniture or attempt to escape from the home.
Basil is unused to being with other dogs and is quite dominant. He can therefore sometimes be reactive and misjudge play, so if homed with another dog, this would need to be a submissive dog, able to widen Basil's experience of interaction with other dogs in a positive manner. Basil ignores other dogs on walks, does not bark or show any interest.
Since coming into the rescue Basil has met children aged 7+ and behaved very well with them, in fact he has positively loved their company, showing none of the reported growls or snappy behaviour. However, these children are of course nicely behaved, doggy sensible, and not unkind to him, so he has found this a positive experience. We would consider homing where there are children aged 8+ who have experience of dogs, and sensible behaviour around them.
Basil cannot be homed with cats or furries, he is a terrier with terrier instincts!
He loves food and treats and will sit nicely for them, so training would be fun to work with. He also loves his toys and is happy to play.
Basil travels well in a car. He has not needed thorough grooming so this has not been tested but is happy to be handled and stroked, including his feet. He also loves people so new faces are greeted with pleasure.
He pulls slightly on the lead but this would be easily corrected with ongoing training, and his recall is very good.
He can be left for up to 3 hours, but in the foster home this has been in the company of other dogs, so if he was to be an only dog please be aware that he did have some separation worries when he first arrived and this may need gentle management to begin with to ensure he does not become anxious again.
Basil's foster Mum has this to say about him: "Basil is a lovely dog that needs some further training and lots of love and affection. He does not like push bikes and if off lead would chase. He is a dog that with guidance, love and training would make the perfect companion, he loves to please you and in the evening loves nothing more than to snuggle next to you. He is crate trained and toilet trained. The family who end up with Basil will be very lucky as in the short time we have spent with him he has bonded so much with us and we will really miss him."
Summary
Could be homed with another (submissive) dog
No cats or small furries
Children aged 8+ and dog experienced
No full time working homes
Basil is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.
