Please read Stewie's details carefully before deciding whether you are the right home for him. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
This handsome little man is as far as we can tell a long-haired Chihuahua. It was suggested by his previous owner that he may have some Pomeranian or other breed mix in him, but we think he's all Chi. Whatever he is, Stewie is a gem!
Aged just 3 years old, Stewie is being cared for in a foster home in Norfolk, and any prospective new owner must be willing to travel to meet him there. He is living alongside other dogs happily and we would prefer to home him with another small confident but not too boisterous dog, with whom he can enjoy playtimes and walks.
Stewie can be a little wary of other dogs on walks, especially larger ones and will bark at first, but he is gaining confidence nicely, so a confident owner who is not tempted to pick him up and avoid meetings is essential.
He has accepted living with cats in the foster home, and although he does bark at them, when told no he has learned that they are to be left alone. So confident, dog aware cats in a new home that won't run and are used to being barked at initially with an owner used to the settling in process would be accepted.
Stewie is very nicely behaved around children and enjoys their company and affection. But like all little dogs children need to understand that he is not a toy to be picked up and carried around. We will consider homes where children are aged 5 years and over, and are used to being around dogs and know how to behave sensibly.
Stewie can be a bit of a fussy eater, preferring tripe and biscuit with his fosterer, and is not a big treat fan, but he does enjoy playing with his toys, so the use of a favourite toy would be an advantage in training. He travels very well in a car, can be left at home for short periods (he settles well after an initial bark), and he walks extremely well on lead. He's not a complete angel though, he does enjoy a good old game with the post when it comes through the letterbox!
Meeting new people is all fun for Stewie, and he gets very excited so teaching him not to jump up still needs work as does his recall when off lead. He can get a little worried if other dogs approach him and sometimes runs off to hide behind his fosterer or a tree! But this is improving, and as he gains trust and a bond with his new owner, recall will become more firm too.
Due to his fluffy coat Stewie does need regular grooming all over, and you must be committed to this to keep him knot free, and trimming around his rear end to prevent him becoming dirty. He finds this a little intrusive (wouldn't we all!) but again, time and patience will gain his trust, and the help of a professional groomer is of course always an option.
Stewie's foster Mum Donna has this to say about him: "He has been an absolute joy to have, he made himself at home as soon as he arrived, everyone that has met him has fallen in love with him."
Summary
A home with another small, confident but not overly boisterous friendly bog
Confident cats would be ok
Children over 5 years, who know that dogs are not toys
A home committed to training, and grooming!
Stewie is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, flea and worm treated.
