A few weeks ago a little dog was found straying in the Bristol area. She was collected and taken into the local pound, then moved to a local fosterer as her condition was serious and she would not have coped with a kennel setting.
Kerry has fostered for TLDR before, and felt that we would be the ideal rescue to offer ongoing support and back-up. There was an owner who was aware of her whereabouts, and promised to collect her...but that never transpired...perhaps because they knew they would be seriously questioned about her dreadful condition...
And so, on 19th June, little Wafer was signed over to The Little Dog Rescue, under Kerry's care.
Named by Kerry, Wafer (wafer thin / waif & stray) has made incredible progress already, which is testament to Kerry's care.
This was Wafer when she arrived:
Seriously emaciated, with terrible skin, bald down her back, streaming eyes, sore ears and bones sticking out all over, in season, and at some point bred from leaving her belly and teats saggy.
Kerry cried when she first saw her, and it's not hard to see why. Such a beautiful trusting face, neglected to such a degree
But with love, care, medicated baths, medication and good food, it's always amazing how resilient these little souls can be. The transformation is already underway, although it will be several months before Wafer is at a weight or strength to consider vaccinations and spaying.
She is sharing the foster home with two other dogs and gets along very well with them. She can be a little shy with new people but is getting more confident and has been fine with children too. She's a lovable little girl who enjoys affection, and loves sofa time!! She enjoys knocking her treat ball around for her meals but has no idea of how to play with toys, Kerry says "we're working on it" and added "Wafer is almost house-trained with just the odd accident, is happy in a crate where she sleeps at night. She's not a yappy terrier and is actually a quiet little girl. She does whinge a bit when I leave the room and this needs keeping an eye on to make sure this doesn't escalate into separation anxiety related problems."
Wafer will continue to need medication for her eyes, ears and skin for a while, and will remain with Kerry until she is given the all clear by the vet, but look what a little TLC can achieve:
Kerry will keep us updated with Wafer's progress. We all know she is a beautiful girl waiting to shine!
If you would like to make a donation towards Wafer's ongoing treatment costs, please use the donate button at the top of the page, or via Paypal to donations@littledogrescue.co.uk. If you would prefer to make a direct bank transfer payment, please ask a staff member for details. Make sure you add a message stating that your payment is for Wafer, and it will be specifically earmarked for her.
