Please read Bentley’s details carefully before deciding whether you might be the ideal home for him.
Bentley is a 4 yr old Yorkshire Terrier, with the cutest face and a personality to match. However he does have some specific needs.
Bentley came to the rescue from a private home, after his ‘terriertude’ became difficult to manage in a busy, socially active home. Bentley was very definitely a ‘Mummy’s boy’ and had become a little snappy with Dad and visitors to the home, feeling the need to guard and protect her.
He has been with his foster Mum, Claire, since March, and with a full assessment we are looking for a specific kind of home for Bentley. Previous Yorkie/Terrier experience is a must. Whilst Bentley is a very loving and affectionate boy, he is also quick to choose a bond with ‘his’ person, occasionally to the detriment of others in the home. He needs a home with no young children, and with owners who understand a terrier’s need for routine and fair but firm boundaries.
Bentley is getting along fine with the resident dogs in the home, but does need to be kept on lead when out and about, as his manner of greeting new dogs is very vocal and ‘terrier’ in nature. If approached by an offlead dog, Bentley will become defensive and snap.
Bentley has accepted the resident laid back cat, but would chase cats given the chance, so a home without any would be best.
He is currently living with a 12 year old child, but has nipped her, so we feel a home with no children or teenagers would be best. Bentley really thrives on the one to one and a quieter home environment. So someone who lives alone, or a retired active couple with previous Yorkie experience would be perfect.
He is fed a dry complete diet, and natural dog treats, travels well in a car, and is crate trained so can be left for short periods for shopping etc. He has not been left for more than a couple of hours generally, as his foster Mum works from home.
Bentley walks very well on a lead, he doesn’t pull...until he sees another dog when he becomes very vocal and wants to get to them. This may be helped with further training. Recall at home is generally good, but he does need to be kept on lead for walks. He now knows the basics (sit, paw, leave) and is learning to give up toys when asked.
He greets new people well, and adores everyone. He is happy to share his affection and will sit on people’s laps and give them kisses.
Bentley loves a bath and being groomed, although can be a little anxious about having his eyes cleaned.
In Summary:
A home with no children
Previous Yorkie/Terrier, or 'nippy' experience
No cats
Someone at home most of the time
He is neutered, vaccinated, flea and worm treated, and will be microchipped before rehoming.
