Please read Ralph's details carefully before deciding to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Ralph was a pre-Christmas foundling, a stray who ended up in the pound and was aptly named Elf during his stay. He is a 3-4 year old smooth coated JRT who was rather overweight at 12kg, but has been losing weight nicely on a balanced diet and regular exercise in his foster home, where his name was adapted to Ralph post Christmas.
Ralph is currently in a foster home in Kent, sharing it with a placid resident male JRT but he can be jealous and reluctant to share the attention, especially when it comes to sharing a lap. So whilst he could be homed with another dog it would be best if that was a non reactive larger breed who does not expect lap cuddles, or possibly a confident female, happy with her place in the home and able to keep Ralph in check. However, the fosterer is a single lady, so a home with more than one lap to share around may find this easier to manage! He would be equally happy as a solo dog, so long as he has human company.
Outside of the home Ralph meets dogs he meets on walks happily, and is always willing to greet them with a wag.
Being a typical terrier Ralph is not suited to a home with cats or small furries.
He behaves well around children, but becomes fed up with them after a time (not in a nasty way) so we would prefer to home where children are dog sensible and aged 8 years and over.
Ralph is very food focused, which is great from a training point of view, but he is very resourceful when it comes to obtaining extras he shouldn't have! Tea cups, sandwiches, biscuits and other snacks must cannot be left in Ralph's reach, and his current diet must be adhered to to ensure he does not pile back on those pounds His foster Mum allows him a treat when she comes in after a trip out, and another at bedtime, and he looks forward to that routine.
He can also be possessive of his own food, and a watchful eye should be kept if feeding at the same time as another dog as he will try to muscle in and steal the other dog's food. A submissive dog is likely to simply walk away and let him, so it is important to always watch whilst feeding or separate to ensure both get their allocated meal.
As with most terriers toys need to be sturdy, and he loves a game of tuggy, or ball. But soft toys will be shredded quickly.
On walks Ralph initially pulls with excitement, but then slows down and settles into a steady pace. We suspect he may not have been regularly exercised for some time, so is enjoying this new found energy level with the weight loss. He loves to sniff and explore on his walks. Recall is a work in progress as he is still learning his new name, so as yet he has not been let off lead in an open space. However, he certainly respond well to the sound of a rustling food packet.
Ralph loves people and is an affectionate boy so new people are all greeted with enthusiasm. He assumes all visitors are coming to see him and expects to be made a fuss of, even by workmen
And he is a real cuddle monster, wanting to be close to his person as much as possible. He has clearly been in a loving home at some point and has had a close bond with someone. He is used to sleeping on/in the bed, and has separation issues if this is not allowed. His foster Mum is working on crate training, and he is beginning to tolerate it, but this will be an ongoing process a new home will need to continue, unless they are happy for him to share their bed.
Ralph can be left for short periods of time but is easily disturbed by people passing the window if he can see out, or noises he can hear. Leaving a radio on or closing the curtains helps with his. For this reason though we are looking for a home where someone is at home much of the time, or has the ability to help continue the work his foster Mum has begun on building his confidence at being left for short periods.
He travels well in a car, only whining to let you know he needs a 'wee break', but does need harnessing or crating as he'd prefer to be on your lap! He loves being brushed and gently groomed...it's all extra fuss and attention.
Ralph's foster Mum has loved having him, but feels he needs to begin bonding in a new home before he becomes too settled with her and suffers the wrench of another move. We feel that Ralph may have had quite a pampered existence previously and is a work in progress, but is such a wonderful companion for the right home. He is very loving and loyal, and bonds easily. If you are looking for a companion who will be by your side, sharing every day with you, then Ralph's definitely your man.
Ralph has just had an operation to remove a large fatty lump, so is recuperating from that, and is still to have his second vaccination. However we are happy to accept applications in the meantime. He will be ready to leave for a new home on or around 3rd February.
Ralph is neutered, will be fully vaccinated, is microchipped, flea and worm treated.
Summary
A home with another dog is possible pending introductions - that dog should be non reactive and well mannered, but confident
Someone at home much of the time able to work on Ralph's need for company and separation training
No cats or small furries
Children ages 8 +
An active home able to offer regular walks and ongoing training
