Please read Skippy's details carefully before deciding whether to submit an application. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered.
Skippy came to the rescue from a council pound having completed his legal 7 day stay. Sadly he was not microchipped and no owner came forward to claim him. He did not cope well with the kennel environment and became fearful, displaying signs of fear aggression (although did not bite at any time) and for this reason we will only consider homes who will not use kennels for holidays, and who understand that this may be a lifelong fear that is never fully resolved. He can be troubled by some situations so we are looking for an understanding and knowledgeable home.
Despite this Skippy is a fantastic little JRT with a generally happy personality, who is a lot of fun to know.
This handsome lad is sharing a foster home with multiple dogs, both large and small and he loves to play with them, although is more comfortable with those is own size or smaller. He also greets dogs on walks in a friendly manner, and has shown no aggression whatsoever.
Skippy has not been tested with cats or small furries, but as he is a terrier we would advise caution and not home where there are cats for safety.
He has met dog sensible children aged 12+ in the foster home comfortably, but has a tendency to stiffen and given warning signals if he feels threatened so for this reason we will not consider homing where children are younger than this.
Skippy is quite food orientated and will steal other dogs food if he can...he's an opportunist! For this reason he is fed separately from the other dogs. He will guard high value treats, but is happy to share toys and enjoys a game of tuggy both with humans and other dogs. He will chase a ball, but as yet has not mastered bringing it back!
Skippy settles to travel in a car after a little initial whining, and is not travel sick.
He can be left at home for a few hours, but in the foster home this has been with other dogs for company, so we would prefer to home either with other dogs, or in a home where someone is at home most of the time.
Like most terriers, Skippy is an active boy and loves his walks. He can be a little excited on lead at first, but soon settles nicely and walks well.
Although fine with most people he has met, Skippy can be a little uncertain of some large men. However, if approached calmly and sensibly, in a non threatening manner he is happy after an initial sniff and accepts them.
His recall is great around the home and garden but he has not been tried off lead outside of the home, so this will need ongoing work in a new home. He tends to show all the usual terrier distractions, so a firm bond must be established before this is attempted.
Skippy is very good with all aspects of grooming.
His fosterer had this to add:
"Skippy is a very lively little Terrier who bonds very quickly with his humans and loves a fuss. He loves to play with other dogs but prefers dogs his own size or smaller. He lives happily alongside my other dogs but prefers to play with my Shih Tzu or his foster sister who is a tiny Yorkie. House training is a bit hit and miss. During the day he will take himself off outside whilst you are here but will soil indoors if left and also at night if not crated. He also sometimes refuses to go out when asked to do so and will hide. Particularly after tea and at last wee time. I have a house-line on him for this reason only. Maybe in the past he may have been shut out for long periods?? He just needs a bit more one on one time and patience.
He'll make a lovely little companion for somebody as he loves attention and loves to snuggle up on your knee or right beside you on the couch."
