Please read Jack's details carefully before deciding whether he is the right dog for you. Applications which do not meet the criteria will not be considered. Jack is a special little man and we are looking for a special retirement home able to meet his needs.
As the saying goes "You can't buy love" and it is impossible to put a price on the love this little man would bring into your life. He has some special needs and we are looking for a calm, quiet retirement home where he will spend the remainder of his years receiving all the love he deserves, and ensuring his medical needs are met. For this reason we are waiving our usual adoption donation and asking you to consider making a donation of your choice. So, what is love worth?
Jack is a 12 (almost 13) year old miniature Yorkshire Terrier gentleman who came to us from a private home under very sad circumstances and we know his previous Mum wanted the very best for him.
He has some medical issues which require ongoing medication.
Health Issues:
Breathing Problems - Possibly related to a weak trachea or narrowed airways. For this Jack is on Medrone V 2mg - half a tablet once a day.
Grade 2 Heart Murmur - Whilst this is not a high grade and not severe, in combination with the above issue it is eased with medication. He is on Prilactone 10mg - half a tablet once a day.
Open sore on left thigh (cannot be removed surgically due to depth and risk of general anaesthetic) - Fuciderm Gel - applied twice a day to reduce inflammation and clear up infections.
Jack has advanced cataracts in both eyes leaving him with very little vision. He also has limited hearing.
The cost of ongoing medication can be reduced by purchasing a written prescription from the vet and sourcing the medications from online veterinary pharmaceutical companies, and further information about this will be provided to prospective new homes.
Despite his health needs Jack has proved to be a delight to foster and his foster Mum has thoroughly enjoyed his company. He tends to be a bit of a solitary chap, not interacting with other dogs, so we would prefer to find a home where he would be the only dog, or living alongside a similarly aged, disinterested and calm little one. On walks he will have a quick sniff if another dog gets very close, but shows little interest and quickly moves on.
He ignores cats and furries, so a home with dog friendly cats is possible.
Jack does not choose to interact with children; he doesn't dislike them and will tolerate being gently stroked, but we would prefer a home with no children and where visiting children are aged 12+. Bouncy dogs, or active children cause him to become distressed, which in turn affects his breathing, so it is important that his home is a calm one with a peaceful ambience. If there were occasions where visiting family/children were likely and this might cause distress, it would be sensible to provide a separate room for Jack to settle down to sleep.
Jack loves his food and all treats! He can be a little possessive over a treat but only if he thinks it is being taken from him. This is not in an aggressive way though, he just tries to swallow it quicker! Both food and treats are given away from other dogs in the foster home so that he can take his time and enjoy them. He has no interest in toys.
He travels well in a car, curling up and sleeping. He can be left for periods at home alone, and has been left for up to one and a half hours in the foster home, where again he simply curls up in bed and sleeps. He will allow bathing, brushing, eye cleaning and nail clipping, although tolerates rather than enjoys these.
Despite his health issues Jack loves his walks, and it is important that he still has access to two 30-40 minute walks a day to maintain his current fitness. These can be slow and steady, even more so when he becomes stubborn about exploring a new smell! He walks well on lead however and does not pull. With his loss of sight and hearing he has not been let off lead, but he has good recall at home when he can hear you.
Jack gets very excited when visitors come round and wants to sit on their knee. When out and about he tends to ignore other people, probably due to not seeing them, but remains calm when they get close.
Jack is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm treated.
Summary
A quiet, calm home
Ideally as an only dog, or with an elderly placid little dog not interested in playing
Cats would be possible
No resident children, and occasional visiting children aged 12+ only
Commitment to providing Jack's ongoing medical needs
